Plants
for Gardens Big & Small
Bulbs, Tubers & Corms
Bulbs, tubers, and corms and underground storage vessels that all grow plants. Bulbs (think daffodils and tulips) have a central stem surrounded by layers like an onion, and roots grow from a plate on the bottom. Tubers (dahlias and begonias) are chunky underground stems full of energy—plant one and it sprouts from 'eyes.' Corms (crocuses and gladioli), look like bulbs but are solid inside, kind of like a compact energy pack. The plants grown from all three are great for seasonal colour and often bloom year after year. Pop them in the ground, wait a bit, and suddenly—life, colour, and flowers everywhere.
Perennials
Perennials are plants that die back over winter and come back year after year—no need to replant them every season. Once they’re in and happy, they just keep going, often getting bigger and better over time. There’s a huge variety to choose from, whether you want bold colours, soft pastels, leafy textures, tall stems or low growing ground coverage. Some bloom for weeks, others add seasonal bursts, and many attract bees and butterflies.
Shade Loving
A shady corner doesn’t have to be dull—plenty of beautiful plants love the shade and actually thrive in it. Think lush, layered textures and deep, calming greens. Ferns, hostas, and heucheras are classics, bringing bold leaves and subtle colour. Add in foxgloves or astrantias for height and soft blooms. Even some types of hydrangeas and hellebores do brilliantly in low light. Shade-loving plants often have a woodland vibe, creating peaceful, cool spots perfect for relaxing. So don’t fight the shade—embrace it. With the right plants, that gloomy corner can become one of the most magical parts of your garden.
Shrubs
Shrubs, whether evergreen or deciduous, add shape, texture, and colour all year round. Need a splash of winter green? Evergreens have you covered. Want spring flowers or fiery autumn leaves? Go deciduous. There’s a shrub for every spot—sun, shade, wet, dry, you name it. From compact box balls to tall flowering hydrangeas, the variety is massive. Shurbs work as borders, hedges, backdrops, or statement plants. Plus, they’re generally low-maintenance and great for wildlife. Basically, shrubs do a bit of everything and make your garden feel full, balanced, and alive without too much fuss.
Trees
Trees are the backbone of the garden bringing structure, shade, plus year-round interest—from spring blossoms to autumn color. But more than that, trees are good for the planet: they clean the air, help wildlife, and even cool your garden down in summer. The great thing? There’s a tree for every space. Tiny garden? Go for a dwarf tree or something slow-growing like a Japanese maple. Got room to spare? A birch adds drama and life. Trees are long-term friends—they grow with you, shape your space, and bring a real sense of calm and character to any garden.
Woodland
An area that mimics the natural beauty and layers of a forest with dappled sunlight filtering through trees and a mix of shrubs, ferns, wildflowers and ground cover creating a peaceful, shady oasis. Woodland gardens are perfect for areas with partial to full shade, especially under existing trees. Low-maintenance once established, woodland plants are typically hardy, plus they’re excellent for wildlife, creating a diverse habitat. Bonus: leaf litter and mulch helps the soil stay moist and fertile, so you’re not constantly watering or feeding.
